!Help file for Elite Edit by Chris Davis (16/8/95)
==================================================
Purpose
-------
Elite Edit allows you to edit commander files from the game 'Elite'. This
is effectively a cheat that allows you to have whatever equipment, cargo,
etc. you want.
Use
---
To load a commander file drag it to the Elite Edit icon or one of it's
windows.
Clicking with select on the icon bar brings up the general details editor
window.
Clicking with menu on the icon bar brings up the main menu.
Clicking with adjust on the icon bar brings up all four edit windows.
To save a commander file go to the save window off the main menu and drag the
icon to a directory viewer, or enter a full path name and click 'OK'.
Misc
----
Increasing the number of kills increases your combat rating.
Your legal status is given numerically, the lower the cleaner.
Bad news
--------
Unfortunately I was unable to find out what part of the file gave infinite
missiles (as was mentioned in the September 1995 issue of AU)...if there even
is that option!!
Also, setting the number of missles to anything higher than 4 causes the game
to crash, and setting it to less the 0 just means you have no missles (so
you're not allowed to do this).
For the techies
---------------
I was unable to find out what all the words in the commander files were used
for. Some of them seemed to have no effect whatsoever.
The 'trade seed' is used by the main game to calculate the trade prices using
some psuedo random number system, and also to encrypt the file.
The 'mystery word' is ..err. a bit of a mystery. It might have been used for
testing or something..dunno. It needs to be either -1 (FFFFFFFF) or 1 for the
game to work properly. Setting it to anything else causes you to come out in
a funny place when you launch and/or the planets and suns to go haywire.
The mission words are used by the main game to determine how far you are
through a mission or if you have completed/failed it. Some common values:
0 - Has not yet been informed of the mission
88888 - Have failed the mission
99999 - Completed the mission sucessfully
-999 - Have just completed the mission succesfully
-998 )
-997 ) - Just failed the mission (for various reasons)
-996 )
You can refer to the 'Notes.Module' source, from the Sep '95 AU cover
disk, for more information.
